Virtual Styling vs. In-Person: Choose the right one!

One of the questions I hear before someone books a styling session is whether we need to meet in person or whether virtual styling can work just as well.

The honest answer is that both can be useful. The right choice depends less on which format is “better” and more on what you want help with, where you live and how you prefer to work.

If you’re in Minneapolis or the Twin Cities, meeting in person can make certain parts of the styling process easier. But if you’re elsewhere in Minnesota or simply prefer the convenience of working from home – virtual styling can be a great option.

So how do you decide?

What does virtual styling actually look like?

Virtual styling doesn’t mean you’re getting a watered-down version of personal styling.

Depending on your needs, a virtual session can include talking through your wardrobe, discussing what’s working and what isn’t, identifying gaps, planning outfits and creating a clear direction for what to do next.

You can also use your own closet during the session. Rather than taking everything out and bringing it somewhere else, we can work with the clothing you already have in your own space.

For clients who are comfortable with a video-based conversation and want personalized guidance without traveling to the Twin Cities, virtual styling can be a practical way to get started.

When does virtual styling make sense?

Virtual styling can be particularly helpful if:

  • You live outside the Twin Cities.
  • Traveling for an appointment isn’t convenient.
  • You want to work from your own closet.
  • You primarily need guidance, wardrobe planning or outfit ideas.
  • You’re comfortable using video calls.
  • You want styling support without needing to meet in person every time.

I work with clients throughout Minnesota and beyond, so living outside the Minneapolis–St. Paul area doesn’t necessarily mean personal styling is out of reach.

If you’re not sure whether virtual styling would work for what you need, that’s something we can talk through before you book.

When is in-person styling helpful?

There are some things that are simply easier to assess when we’re together in person.

Fit is a good example.

Seeing a garment in person allows me to look more closely at how it fits, how the fabric falls and how the piece works with the rest of your wardrobe. We can also physically work through your closet together, which can be especially helpful when you’re doing a more thorough wardrobe edit.

In-person styling can also be helpful when you’re shopping for something specific or preparing for an important event and want to try pieces on with guidance.

For clients in the Twin Cities, an in-person session can make those parts of the process much more hands-on.

What about a Wardrobe Analysis?

If your main goal is figuring out what you already own, a Wardrobe Analysis can be a particularly useful starting point.

The process is about understanding your existing wardrobe, identifying what works, recognizing gaps and creating a clearer direction for future purchases. Rather than automatically buying more clothes, we can first figure out what your wardrobe actually needs.

Whether that work is best done virtually or in person depends on your wardrobe, your goals and the kind of support you’re looking for.

Do you have to choose just one?

Not necessarily.

Your styling needs can change over time.

You might prefer to start with an in-person session and use virtual styling for future check-ins. Or you might begin virtually and decide later that an in-person session would be helpful.

I don’t think there’s a rule that says you need to choose one format and use it forever.

The important thing is choosing the approach that makes sense for the particular problem you’re trying to solve.

Virtual vs. in-person: which is right for you?

Here’s a simple way to think about it.

Virtual styling may be a good fit if you:

  • Live outside the Twin Cities.
  • Prefer working from home.
  • Mainly need styling guidance and wardrobe planning.
  • Are comfortable using video.
  • Want a flexible way to work with a stylist.

In-person styling may be a better fit if you:

  • Live in the Twin Cities.
  • Want hands-on help with your physical wardrobe.
  • Need help assessing fit in person.
  • Want to try clothing on during the styling process.
  • Prefer face-to-face interaction.

Neither option is automatically better.

The right choice depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.

What doesn’t change between virtual and in-person styling?

Regardless of the format, I want the styling process to be personal to you.

Your lifestyle, preferences, wardrobe, body, schedule and the way you actually live all matter.

I’m not interested in giving you a generic list of clothes you “should” own or telling you to completely change your style because something happens to be trending.

My goal is to help you understand your own style and create a wardrobe that feels like you.

That’s also why I don’t think virtual styling should be viewed as a lesser version of in-person styling. It’s simply a different way of delivering personalized styling support.

What should you consider before choosing?

If you’re still unsure, ask yourself a few simple questions:

What am I actually trying to solve?

Are you overwhelmed by your closet? Looking for better outfits? Preparing for a new job or event? Trying to understand your personal style? Or looking for help finding specific pieces?

Where do I live?

If you’re outside the Twin Cities, virtual styling may make the most sense logistically. If you’re nearby and want hands-on wardrobe support, in-person may be more convenient.

How do I prefer to work?

Some people love the convenience of a video session from home. Others get more value from having someone physically beside them as they work through their wardrobe.

There isn’t a wrong answer.

Still not sure? Let’s talk about it.

You don’t need to decide between virtual and in-person styling before reaching out.

If you tell me a little about what you’re hoping to change, where you’re located and what kind of wardrobe support you’re looking for, we can talk through which approach makes the most sense for you.

I work with clients in the Twin Cities, throughout Minnesota and beyond, so distance doesn’t have to be the reason you put off getting help with your wardrobe.

Or, if you’d rather start with a conversation about your specific needs:

I’d love to hear what you’re looking for and help you figure out the next step.
